Payroll Apprentice
Job description
Working as part of the CleanEvent Payroll and Finance Team and reporting directly to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Apprentice will support the delivery of an accurate, timely, and proactive payroll service across the business. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical payroll and finance skills within a fast paced, supportive environment. In addition, the Payroll Apprentice will work closely with the wider Finance and HR teams, responding to payroll-related enquiries in a professional and confidential manner. You will gain exposure to payroll legislation, company procedures, and internal systems, while developing strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
Key Responsibilities
Support the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accuracy and adherence to payroll deadlines
Assist with inputting and maintaining employee payroll data, including starters, leavers, contractual changes, and amendments
Help process statutory payments and deductions, including SSP, SMP, pensions, tax, and National Insurance
Respond to basic payroll queries from employees, escalating more complex issues where appropriate
Support payroll reconciliation activities and assist with checking payroll reports for accuracy
Maintain accurate payroll records and employee files in line with GDPR and data protection requirements
Assist with pension administration, including enrolments, opt-ins, opt-outs, and contributions
Support month-end and year-end payroll activities, including reporting and documentation
Work collaboratively with the People team and Finance team to ensure payroll data aligns with employee records
Attend apprenticeship training sessions and complete coursework as required by the apprenticeship programme
Support major events where needed on HF signing in and helpdesk duties.
Stay abreast of legal and social development in payroll and employment law and make recommendations to the payroll manager to improve the payroll service provision
Essential
GCSE’s Maths and English
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Good organisational and time management skills
Comfortable working with numbers and data
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and payroll systems (training provided)
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Willingness to learn and develop within a payroll environment
Clear communication skills and a professional approach
